Irish Concert Draws Large Audience

THE SPIRIT OF ST. PATRICK’S .DAY St. Patrick’s Day was brought to a fitting conclusion in time-honoured fashion in Palmerston North with a con cert and dance in the Empire Hall, admirably arranged by the Convent school committee. The traditional green and gold with the harp of Ireland and other emblems suitable to the occasion, formed the attractive decoration of th. hall. A programme, pleasantly varied, with part-sail gs and instrumental items of Irish flavour, national dances and delightful vocalists to present appealing Irish airs, was fully appreciated by a large audience, encores being emphatically demanded. At the conclusion of the programme Rev. Father L. Jansen expressed regret in the unavoidable absence of Monsignor MacManus and Father Herlihy. It was a great joy, Father Jansen said, to see the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day was still kept alive, and ho expressed his thanks to the committee and artists who had made such a fitting climax possible. Those responsible for the arrangements were: Mesdames V. A. Christensen, J. Jervis, H. Lyons, M. Jones, D. Power and R. Summers, Messrs. J. Redwood (chairman), D. W. Creed (secretary), A. W. Bearsley, J. A’Hern, E. Kavanagh, P. McErlaine, P. Kelly, F. G. Murphy and F. Aisher, the last-named carrying out the duties of stage manager. Mr. T. E. Davidson was M.C. for the danee which followed after a bountiful supper had been served. j Len Smith’s orchestra supplied music for the dancing, which continued until I a late hour.
