Major Emil Fey Suicides
WIFE AND SON JOIN HIM IN DEATH PACT HEIMWEIIR FOUNDER VIENNA, March 16. Major Emil Fey, his wife and son have committed suicide. Major Fey’s sister said: "My brother and his family died like heroes.” The authorities are not publishing the news of the deaths, because Major P’ey was most popular throughout Austria. Other suicides include those of Professor Gabonobl, world-famous gynaecologist, and Professor Gustav Bayer, of Innsbruck University, who poisoned his daughter and then himself. Herr Himmler, German Chief of Police, announced when adressing Austrian police that Major Fey had shot his wife and son, aged 19, and had then committed suicide. Major Fey founded the Vienna Heiui wehr. He wa; a former Vice-Chancellor and was ente known as the “Strong Man of Ai.rtria. Major Fey was a member of the Dollfuss Cabinet and was connected witi the conspiracy which resulted in the assassination of Dr. Dollfuss, the “Pocket Chancellor.” He belonged, howevei, to the group which opposed any sacrifice of Austrian independence. Two reasons are advanced for the Fey tragedy. First, Major Fey’s wife is believed to have been of Jewish origin; secondly, two days before Herr Hitlers coup, Major Fey announced that he intended to form a new Heimwehr in order to counteract Nazi activities.
