Bankers at Golf

St. Patrick’s Day is set aside by the bankers for their annual golf tournament which, this year, was held at Hokowhitu under favourable conditions. The weather, however, must have been a trifle warm, but it was not sultry enough to prevent some of the bankers from recording good rounds. The programme consisted of a Stableford bogey in the morning and a fourball bogey in the afternoon, and, in conjunction, there was a 36-hole medal handicap.

The feature of the day was the win of J. P. Hornabrook in the Stableford and with 39 points lie had a winning margin of four points. Playing to the last green the open champion required a par figure for a 67 and a good second gave him a chance for the 66 and another three points for the Stableford. He went for the three, but the home green has been a real puzzle for some weks and ho overran the hole and missed tho return, carding a live which gave him a round of 68 and one Stableford point instead of two or, possibly, three. Hornabrook played another great round in the afternoon and his aggregate, oil’ the stick, for tho 36 holes was 13S. Under the rules of the tournament, however, a player cannot win more than one event.

The winner of the 3G-hole medal handicap was W. A. Todd, of Masterton, who finished with a net 149, the runner-up being Warne 151. The B grade division of the medal handicap was \vt>n by F. H. Guinness (147), who was ten strokes ahead of the runner-up, E. A. Gardner. The Stableford bogey was won by J. P. Hornabrook with 39 points and A. J. M. Goodwin was runner-up with 35. The B grade winner was M. Bright, 39 points, and G. M. Clark was next with 35.

After lunch the four-ball bogey was played, the winners, B. G. and J. G. Connell, returning a useful card of 6 up. The runners-up were M. N. Doig (Palmerston North) and D. O. L. Howden (Pahiatua), 5 up. In conjunction with the medal handicap there was a hidden number with a prize for the player whose aggregate was nearest, and this was won by F. K. Clavton.

At the conclusion of the tournament the trophies were presented by Mr. A. J. M. Goodwin.
