Road Making Without Metal
(To the Editor.) Sir, —The practice of road making without metal has been in operation in Timaru since 1931. The principle is not new, and where the foundation is sound, as is usually the case in streets which have been well formed and in use more than two years, all that is necessary is an even surface, mechanically graded, tarred and sanded. A few days later sunshine and air hardens it sufficiently for the finishing coat of asphult to be applied. Ordinary road-metal lias a tendency to creep, and form corrugations, during the first year after being laid and rolled, and can only be obviated by sealing an undisturbed and solid foundation. Hard, dry clay will carry all orlinary traffic equal to macadam. Sealing protects the surface by excluding surface moisture.—l am, etc., C. H. MASON.
