Found Dead in Motor-car
TRAGIC END OF MAYOR OF SUMNER Per Pres* Association. CHRISTCHURCH. Last Night. Mr. Thomas Newburgh, Mayor of Sumner and a member of the Christchurch Stock Exchange, was found dead in his motor-car in a quarry on the road between Marble Point and Hanracr Springs about noon to-day. A length of tubing led from the exhaust pip* into the car through a rear window. The body was taken to the Culverden hotel and an inquest was opened later by Mr. H. A. Young, S.M., Coroner. Evidence of identification was given by a sou, Ralph Leslie Newburgh, and the inquest was adjourned sine die to be concluded at Christchurch. Mr. Newburgh was born at Christchurch in 1882 and educated at th* Sydenham School. Recently he had been a prominent member of the school’s diamond jubilee committee. For 18 years he was employed by the Christchurch Gas, Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., and in 1915 he went into partnership with Mr. E. R. Caygill as accountants and sharebrokers and tarried on this business while Mr. Caygill served in the Great War. For a considerable time before his death Mr. Newburgh was in business on his own account as an accountant and sharebroker. He had been a member of the Christchurch Stock Exchange since 1916, was a fellow of the New Zealand Society of Accountants and a past master of the Robert Burns Lodge. He was a member of the Sumner Borough Council in 1927-28 and in 1935 was elected Mayor. He was a former member of tho executive of ike Municipal Association of New Zealand. He wa» a keen bowler, being president of th* Sumner Bowling Club for three yearn and was past president of the Sumnet Life Saving Club. Mr. Newburgh is survived by his wife, one daughter and four sons.
