Austria, once the dominant partner in the great Austro-Hungarian Empire, was reduced by the Great War to a comparatively small but independent State. The majority of its people are German in race, language and culture, but hitherto they have stoutly maintained political independence from their Teutonic brothers. Hitler’s army and Nazi fanaticism, have now made Austria a virtual province in the German Reich. The above map shows Austria in relation to other States of Central Europe.
