Major Trophies to Lytton Street School

£OPANE AND POHANGINA SHAKE DISTRICT HONOURS

Perfect weather conditions favoured /he seventeenth annual sports meeting of the Feilding and District Primary Schools’ Amateur Athletic Association which was held on Kowhai Park, Feilding, on Saturday. There was an excellent gathering of parents, who thorough* Jy enjoyed the sport provided by their children in the lengthy programme of events which commenced at 9 a.m. and concluded at 4 p.m. The organisation was as perfect as ever and the proceedings went through with a precision reflecting every credit on Mr. Frank Thomas, secretary, and his capable staff ot assistants. The chief trophies of the meeting wrere annexed by the Lytton Street School, of Feilding, while the lvopane School captured the Country Schools Cup and the Pohangina School claimed the Collins Memorial Shield. F. Hemingway, of Patea, chairman of the Wanganui Education Board. Mr. G. J. Fitzpatrick, chairman of the association, in addressing the gathering, recalled that the association was founded by Mr. E. O. Banuer, formerly of Feilding, and now of Wellington, and it was the duty of the gathering to honour this gentleman who had inaugurated such a wonderful sportsmeeting for children (applause). Then there was Mr. E. H. Lange, the lirst secretary of the association, who perfected the organisation and for many years devoted a great amount of time towards the gathering. He was happy to say that Mr. Lange, who now resided in Wanganui, was with them that day (applause). - Great credit was also duo to Mr. S. C. Amadio, of Feilding, the original starter for the sports, and who ou retirement has handed the position on to his son, Mr. M. 0. Amadio (applause). Mr. Fitzpatrick went on to announce the winners of the competitions, and cheers were enthusiastically given for the successful schools as well as the runnersup. He went on to introduce the association ’s popular patron, Mr. Hemingway, who had regularly attended the gathering and who always took a keen interest in the sports. After presenting the trophies, Mr. Hemingway offered his congratulations to the committee lor conducting, wkat he considered, the best organised sports meeting in the Dominion. He thanked the teachers who had given their time so freely to help the organisation and to contribute towards its undoubted success. It was a great joy to him to see so many hundreds of children so thoroughly enjoying themselves, and the gathering was one which should have the wholehearted support of every citizen.
