Chewed Thermometer
SEAMAN WHO TOOK TOO MUCH LIQUOR

Stated to have chewed the thermometer when examined at the police station by a doctor, Maurice William Brown, aged 28, seaman, pleaded guilty before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., on charges of being intoxicated in charge of a car, and the conversion of a car valued at £2OO, and driving without a licence. It was stated that the owner of the car with which the accused collided got into a van and chased the accused and arrested him, but not before he knocked a boy off a bicycle. Accused was described as a lmost in mad condition with liquor when examined. When the doctor put a thermometer in his mouth he snapped it and chewed the glass with his teeth, and the doctor had difficulty in preventing him swallowing the glass. Mr. Luxford said that the accused was lucky not to be up on a more serious charge. He imposed two months’ hard labour for conversion of the car, a month’s imprisonment to follow for being intoxicated, and was prohibited from obtaining a licence for two years.
