Tasmania Bringing Trains Up to Date
HOBAliT—Tasmania is modernizing the state railway system to complete with road traffic and to attract more tourists to the state. New and more powerful locomotives have been imported from New South Wales. Old rolling stock has been replaced by up-to-date carriages. Movable seats are taking the place of fixed ones and buffet ears are being attached to the trains on the main lines. There will shortly be placed in commission several streamlined locomotives and some all-steel cars. Both inside and out, the cars are being painted in bright colours with futuristic designs. The question of electrifying the j.~«..,art suburban service is also being considered and it is probable that the surplus power generated at the new power works at Tarraleah which are nearing completion, will be used for this i ,ur ' pose. The possibility of fitting passenger cars with rubber tires is being *avestigated.
