Wanganui Meeting Opens To-day

Cap Has Drawn A High-class Fielc

GOING WILL BE EAST The Wanganui Jockey Club’s autumn meeting will open to-day and as the course is in first-class order and the acceptances are good, some fine racing is indicated. The principal event on to-day’s programme is the W anganui Cup, which will be contested by a really high class field, and this race alone will prove a big attraction to racing enthusiasts. The first event is timed to start at noon and the betting will be single-pool. There are eight acceptors for the Westmere Hurdles and the form horses appear to be .Riotous, Royal Romance, Count Willonyx and Kentucky Song. There may be a surprise but the punters are likely to go most strongly for Riotous, Royal Romance and Kentucky Song. The Juvenile Handicap is next and the topweights are Surmount (9.7) and Footloose (8.5). The distance is five furlongs and the weight should not stop the two at the head of the handicap. Russian Ballet may prove the best of the others, but the betting is fairly certain to point to Surmount and Footloose. Twelve are carded for the Maiden race and the horses with placed per formances this season arc Sigurd, Shangri La, .Scarf Dance, Gold Glare and Fafner. In additiSb, Civil and Zilpah have shown ability to gallop, but the favourites may bo Fafner, Sigurd, Scarf Dance. The Victory Handicap, over a mile and 110 yards, is for apprentice riders and there are seven acceptors. Silvanus, conveyer and Barry are recent winners and they are likely to dominate the betting, with preference for Silvanus over Conveyor and Parry. The Tayforth Handicap is likely to prove something of a puzzle, for no less than six of the seven acceptors have won during the present racing season. To reduce it to three that do not appear to have reached “peak" form, the favourites may be Bonny Glow, Icing and Royal Choice. The Wangaanui Cup has drawn a first-class field and a thrilling race should eventuate. Cuddle was given pride of place with the steadier of 9.13, but a message from Wanganui yesterday was to the effect that this brilliant mare had been withdrawn, also Tigex Gain. Without these the field is one of champions, for there are a numbex of cup winners, including The Buzzer, who won the Auckland two-miler, and Master Cyklon, winner of the Wanganui Cup last year, while Sergia won the Taranaki and Egmont cups. Catalogue reads well with 8.10, for he has been working well since he ran second tc Sergia at Egmont. The Buzzer and The Bigot, also from Awapuni, have had a useful preparation and thej should lack for nothing on the score ol condition. The same applies to Lowen berg and to Master Cyklon, for bott are in great heart. Francis Drake has yet to prove himself over the distance but he, also, has been working pleasing ly. Further down there is Middle, whe will be bracketed with The Bigot. Th< betting will be well spread and th< punters may elect to go most strongly for Catalogue, Sergia and Francos Drake. There are seven carded for the Fly ing Handicap and one of them, Sil vanus, is an acceptor for an earlie; event. The top-weight is Laughing Lass and she is sure to be one of th< favourites. Debham has had a run o: outs, but with 8.8 in the open sprin on the first day of the Wanganui spring meeting he beat some good ones, in eluding Ben Braggie, Royal Chief am Laughing Lass. With a liking for th< course, he might be the upsetting facto to-day. Race Call has been consistent ly good recently and Notium has beei in the money. Silvanus, if reserved must be respected and the same applie to Airing and Aiwai, who have beei working well. The issue is open bu the favourites may be Laughing Lass, Race Call and Debham The day will conclude with the Petri' Handicap. Three that may be expcctet to command a following are Gaily, Cloak and Trebor. THE ACCEPTANCES 12.0
