Keen Competition for Station-bred Sorts HEIFERS SOUGHT AFTER FrorS Our Own Correspondent. HASTINGS, Last Night. The market showed a further sharp rise of 20/- a head and mqfe for fat cattle at Stortford Lodge to-day The yarding of 120 station-bred sorts, consisting entirely of female entries, met with particularly keen competition, in which the butchers easily outstayed the freezing interests. , There were very few pens of good quality, and these made values fully on record price-levels. The chief entry in the cow pens was a draft on account of the Estate of M. Nilsson, which brought up to £ll 12/6. Young cows in this entry averaged 35/per lOOlbs. Poorer quality pens made very dear buying, due to the butchers not Being able to show any discrimination. Heifers were eagerly sought after, making to £l2 5/-. The best pens realised 36/- to 37/6 per lOOlbs., but neverthless made better buying than the cows. Inferior cows met with equally firm selling, making to £6. Other cows showing any quality at all, even if small grown, brought £7 10/-.-The only male cattle were two badlybred Aberdeen Angus steers, which were unfinished. Vealers made exceptional values for their size, bringing up to £4 5/-. Realisations were as under:— HEIFER RATES. A medium-framed Aberdeen Angus cross heifer, in light condition, sold particularly well at £8 10/-. Two well-framed heavy Red Polled heifers, solidly framed, met with keen competition to sell at £l2. In the same pen a Hereford cross heifer, equally well finished and prime, brought £l2 6/-. This pen of heifers would not kill out at more than 7001bs. Two medium-framed Aberdeen Angus cross heifers, in light, prime condition and would not kill out at more than 5501b5, sold to £lO 17/- making, on their quality, dear buying. COW BEEF RATES. A single, aged heavy Hereford cow, very plain in quality, made £9 15/.. Two young Holstein cows, solidly finished and prime, sold to £lO 15/-. On account of the Estate of M. Nilsson, four dehorned Hereford cows, varying in finish and quality, brought £ll 1/- for the heaviest entry. The remainder, which were much lighter, made from £7 to £7 10/-. On account of the same vendors, aix well-framed Aberdeen Angus croei cows, of good weights and showing quite a solid finish, sold to £ll 5/-. Also from the same source, five cleanbred, heavy Aberdeen Angus cross, in good order and should hang up well, brought to £ll 12/6. A further pen from the same source of similar-bred young cows, lighter than the previous pen and showing quality* brought to £lO 5/-. These cows would make about 5751b5. Down from Waipukurau, three horned, young, medium-framed solidlyfinished Hereford cows, showing prime quality, realised £ll 10/-. VEALERS. Two quite well-grown Hereford vealms, in good condition, were passed at ;he good figure of £4 5/-. Two small-grown Aberdeen Angus /ealers, in medium order only, brought » 70/-.
