Launch Catches Fire Near Cape Kidnappers
BENZINE DRUM EXPLODES Per A»»ociatlon NAPIER, Last Night. Mr. John O. Tait, junior, of Napier, received burns, necessitating his removal to Napier Hospital, and the remaining two of the crew minor injuries when the fishing launch River Nile caught fire and foundered in tho vicinity of Cape Kidnappers to-day. The cr.-vv was rescued by the fishing launch Sea Hawk, but not till after they spent 20 minutes in the water. It is understood that benzine from a drum on the bow of the vessel leaked into the cabin when Mr. Tait was usnig a primus stove to prepare a meal, a violent explosion following, ripping both the deck and bottom of the boat out. Mr. Tait, senior, was trapped under the water by nets and ropes and, after diving twice, his son, despite his in juries, brought him to the surface, after which the second launch arrived.
