Women’s Institute
RANGIOTU. The first meeting of the Women’s Institute for 1938 took the form of a husband’s evening, when husbands and men friends of members were the guests. The president, Mrs S. Pearce, extended a cordial welcome to all present, and expressed her best wishes foi a happy and prosperous New Year. After the routine business was concluded, a programme of games and competitions was enjoyed and after supper Mrs Whitehead provided bright music for dancing. A bring and buy stall for the presentation fund did good business, with Mesdames Millard and Andrew in charge. The competition winners were:—Cold sweet, Mrs Russell 1, Mrs Millard 2. Best arranged bowl of flowers, Mrs Beard 1, Mrs Pearce 2, Mrs Jepson 3. The euppei hostesses were Mesdames Buchanan, Tennant and Jepson. Mr T. Attwood expressed the thanks of the men pre* sent for the very enjoyable evening and trusted that it would be the forerunner of many more such functions. < The annual picnic of tho Women's Institute is to be held at Foxton beacll on Saturday next, 19th inst. COLYTON The Colyton Women’s Institute held its annual meeting on Tuesday in the form of an outdoor gathering, on Mr J. Shortall’s riverbank property “West End.” Mrs. Beatson presided over a good attendance of members. Nominations were called for the election of a new committee. A silver engraved vase won by the Institute at tho Feilding Show was much admired. A ‘ ‘ bring and buy” stall in charge of Mrs Masters was well patronised. Competitions resulted:—Decorative vase, Mrs Jones 1, Miss Pearce 2, Mrs Hills 3. Best bloom, Mrs. James’ “dahlia” 1, Mrs. Evored’s “fushia” 2, Mrs N. Shortall’s “petunia” 3. The hostesses for March will be Mesdames Krull, Muvicar, and Misses H. and N. Hansen and Lankshear. HALCOMBE, Presiding over the first meeting of 1938, Mrs Davies, president of the Halcombe Women’s Institute welcomed all, wishing members a prosperous New Year. Mrs Curtis apologised for. her absence. Mrs Ashworth and Dudding kindly agreed to undertake the role of sunshine members for the coming month. Miss J. Thow was welcomed back after her recent indisposition. M j R. Anderson gave a report of the half-yearly group meeting held in Stanway. The next group meeting will be held in Sanson on August 10th at 1 p.m. Members are reminded of a lecture in Palmerston on March 8 at 2 p.m., discussing “World Affairs, and Peace.” Tho Halcombe Institute birthday is to be celebrated by a 500 and dance on April 6th, arrangements to be finalised at next meeting. Tho Golden Thread was continued by Mrs Jenson and Miss D. Field. Owing to the annual meeting no Golden Thread will be given next month. Instead members are asked to give ideas of suitable demonstrations for the coming year. The competition for sponge sandwich was won by Mrs. Brett with Miss O. Ferguson 2 and Miss E. Ferguson 3rd. Mrs Miles and Jenson will be hostesses next month. NIREAHA. The monthly meeting of the Nireaha Women’s Institute was attended by about twenty members. The competition s resulted as follows:—Fancy apron, Mrs J. Drysdale I, Miss H. Drysdale 2 and 3. Piklets, Mrs F. Hansen I, Mrs Petersen 2, Mrs J. Drysdale 3. Best bloom, Mrs Terry 1, Mrs Wilkie 2. Mrs Fraser (Eketahuna) demonstrated art silk, and she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. A baby show arranged by Mrs Albrechstcu (Eketahuna) and judged by some visitors, resulted as follows:—Baby under 2 years, Peter Hawkins 3. Baby under 12 months, Margaret Mills 1. The hostesses, Mrs J. Drysdale and Mrs Terry served afternoon tea.
