From Our Own Correspondent. Staff Picnic.
The annual picnic and sports of the staff of Messrs Justice and Edmunds (Palmerston North), was held on Sunday in showery weather. The organisers were unfortunate in their choice of days, as this function had postponed from the previous week on account of the weather. Nevertheless there was a good attendance of staff members and their friends, approximately 100 travelling to the beach in private cars. Arrangement? for the day’s outing were in the capable rands of Messrs V. Turner. C. S. Lawson. W. Wyatt and R. Tester. The weather cleared sufficiently for the following sports programme to be proceeded with: Men’s 75 yards race, D. Horn 1, R. Tester 2, W. Wyatt 3; 100yds. championship, R. Tester I, D. Horn 2, W. Wyatt 3; long jump. R. Tester 1, D. Wyatt 2, J. Farley 3; hop. step and jump, R. Tester 1. W. Wyatt 2, D. Horn 3; putting the shot. W. Wyatt 1, V. Turner 2, D. Horn 3; visitors’ race, C. Dredge 1, J. Dredge 2; single ladies' race, Miss R. Potbury 1, Miss M. Bailey 2: married ladies’ race, Mrs C. K. Toye 1, Mrs J. Elliott 2; boys' race, David Jenkins 1, Bert Jenkins 2; girls’ race, Nola Turner 1, D. Cox 2; championship cup. most points, R. Tester. School Picnics. On Friday the Tiakitahuna school children held their annual picnic and sports on the river flat. Heavy showers fell soon after the party arrived, but a break in the weather enabled them to spend a happy day. Bainesse school also chose Friday for its annual outing, the shelter-shed being commandeered for refuge from the rain, and for the serving of refreshments. The committee, which worked hard to make the day a success for tne kiddies, was as follows: Messrs M. J. Ryan (chairman), F. J. Legge (secretary), C. Buchanan, D. Tennant, Attwood and A. M. Thessman. Personal. Mr and Mrs H. Bycroft and family, ol Palmerston North, are the guests of Mr and Mrs G. H. By croft. New arrivals on the river-front are Mr and Mrs O’Brien and family, of Palmerston North. Mrs G. Chapman and her sons, Mr Les. Chapman (P.N.), and G. Chapman (Wellington), were the guests of Mrs Barnaby for the week-end. Mr and Mrs Doak and family (P.N.) have taken a house on the river-front for a short term. Mr and Mrs N. Poppe and family have returned to Marton after spending a short holiday here. Miss Taaft (P.N.) is the guest of Mrs Jay. Mr W. Hunt (Fitzherbert West), is the guest of Mrs Barnaby for a few aays. Mr and Mrs Ballinger (P.N.) spent the week-end at their cottage on the riverilat. Mrs Wilkins (Blenheim) accompanied them. Mr and Mrs A. Silva and Miss Connie Silva (P.N.) returned home on Sunday, after a month's camping holiday in the Hall Reserve. Miss Joan Penny returned to Waitarere on Saturday, after spending a week here as the guest of Mrs Barnaby. Mr and Mrs B. R. Way (P.N.) have taken a house on the river-front for a week. Miss Bessie Mcßrearty returned to Linton on Saturday after spending a week here as the guest of her grandmother, Mrs C. Dawson. Mr W. Carruthers (P.N.) is camping at the Point for a short term.
