Drink Sold at Night
CARLTON CLUB LICENSEE FINED Frtfm Our Own Correa DOndent. HASTINGS, Feb. 15. A plea of guilty was entered by George Southgate Luttrell, licensee of the Carlton Club Hotl (Mr E. T. Gifford) when charged before Mr J. Miller S.M., at the Hastings Magistrates’ Court this morning, with (1) exposing liquor for sale during prohibited hours, and (2) with opening his premises for the 3ale of liquor during prohibiten hours. Senior-Sergeant G. Sivyer said that Sergeant Mclntosh and Constable Foote visited the Hotel at about 10.30 o’clock on the evening in question. They were making towards the back bar when they heard a scuffle of men getting away. Some men were found trying to get up the back stairs and in various parts of the building. The barman was behind the bar and there was evidence of drinks having been served just previously. Counsel said that the bar was a private one, well away from the street, and was used mainly for serving guests though occasionally strangers found their way in to it. The licensee had been at the hotel for 12 months and this was the first occasion he had been found to have committed a breach. I The prosecution withdrew the first charge, and on the remaining count Luttrell was fined £5, with 10/- costs. A number of men found on the premises, as well as other defendants found at varying dates on different licensed premises after hours, were charged with being found unlawfully On licensed premises and fines ranging from 15/- to £1 10/- with oosts, were" imposed.
