RESCUE FROM RIVER
Non-swimmer Pushed Into Wiiter by Companion MAN’S ]PROMPT ACTION From Our Own Correspondent. WAIPUKURAU, Feb. 15. The rescue oi: a young man wno was pushed into the water by a companion caused some ex citement at Patangata on Sunday afternoon. Mr Claude White, an employee of tho Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Ltd., at Waipukurau, was standing on the banks of the Tukituki river at Patangata when another young man, who thought that Mr White was eible to swim, approached him from behind and pushed him into the ifoter whiclh at this point was deep after recent heavy rain. Mr White rank immediately and was in difficulties in the swift-flowing water until another young man, Mr Jim McKay, of the Tavistock Hotel staff, dived iu to his rescue. Another employee of the Hawke’s Bay Farmers’, Miss Doris Thompson, then dived in also, and with the aid of others on the bank who held tree branches out to them these two effected a rescue. Except for shock, Mr White was none the worse for his experience. The Hawke’:j Bay Farmers 9 cricket team was playing a match at the time near the scene of the rescue, so a number of spectators quickly gathered at the spot. When approsiched this afternoon by a reporter Mr McKay, who took part in the rescue, was reticent, and replied modestly that he had nothing to say.
