Export Figures Rise

LARGE LAMB INCREASE. MORE STOCKS ON HAND. Shipments of all classes of meat from New Zealand, with the exception of chilled beef, increased substantially during the first four months of the current export season to January 31. Figures issued by the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board show that chilled beef exports at 55,578 quarters fell by only 17G quarters. A reflection of the heavier lamb killings is the fact that shipments were about 1(30,000 carcases in advance of last year. The large total of 113,118 carcases of mutton shipped last month resulted in the total for four months showing a rise of almost 30,000 carcases.

Exports from October 1, 1937, to January 31, compare with those of the same period of the previous season as follows:

1937-38 1936-37 Chilled beef (quarters) 55,878 56,054 Frozen beef (quarters) 15,057 37,300 Muttou (carcases) .. 371,225 343,273 Lamb (carcases) .. 1,790,363 1,632,566 Pork (carcases) .. 194.135 183,106 Boneless beef (bags) 78,603 39,674

Considerably larger stocks of all classes were held in the Dominion at January 31 than at the same time last season. The slight fall in chilled beef exports is compensated for by the fact that tho quantity not yet shipped was 1G63 quarters, whereas at January 31, 1937, there were no stocks on hand. With the exception of baconers, stocks in ships to sail also were greater. A comparison of killings in the first four months of the season is as follows:

1937-38 1936-37 Chilled beef (quarters) 69,538 56,149 Frozen beef (quarters) 13,666 6,707 Wethers (carcases) .. 261,251 166,195 Ewes (carcases) .. 191,555 45,928 Lambs (carcases) .. 3.543.637 3,435,134 Porkers (carcases) .. 146,129 138,313 Baconers (carcases) .. 124,237 130,046 Boneless beef (freight carcases) .. 120,75 S 50,557 Boneless bobby veal (carcases) .. 72,424 69,709 Sundries (carcases) .. 96,619 53,359 In all classes of killings, the North Island shows an advance on the South Island, where no killings -were made for either chilled or frozen beef. Killings for boneless beef in both islands are more than double those of the previous period.
