PERSONALITIES
Mr. C. S. Plank, telegraph engineer, Palmerston North, has left for a visit to Wellington. Rev. C. W. HaskeJl, who has been in charge of the Anglican Mission, in Karachi, India, is at present home on furlough, and is staying with his parents at Edinburgh Street, Spreydon. Visitors at the Palmerston North Rotary Club dinner yesterday were Messrs. E. Weston (Christchurch), N. R. Lecher, R. W. Priest, T. R. Hodder and W. Jaggard (all of Palmerston North).
Though he has not yot resumed his official duties, the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, continues to show continued improvement in health, and is now out of bed. Mr. G. H. Bourne, maiiager of the Christchurch branch of the Bank of New South Wales, will leave shortly to take up a new appointment at Rockhampton, North Queensland.
On the eve of his departure for Wellington, Mr. Lloyd Nicholls was yesterday made a presentation by the staff of Messrs. Berryman and Company. He received the best wishes of the firm.
Mr. Geoffrey Myers returned to Wellington by tho Cambridge after five years' residence in England. For the past twelve months Mr. Myers has been resident surgical officer at Ancoat.s Hospital, Manchester. Air. H. Tansley Witt, who is associated with Viscount Nuffield's business interests, arrived at Auckland from England on Saturday by the Rangitiki. He is accompanied by Mrs. Witt and proposes to stay in the Dominion for a fortnight. Mr. H. A, Sommerville, secretary of the Auckland Hospital Board, will retire on February 28, according to the decision of the board in November to terminate the engagement of employees who had reached tho retiring age or period. Air. Sommervillo has filldd the office for 20 years.
Sir Arthur Grant, accompanied by Lady Grant, arrived in Auckland on Saturday by the Rangitiki. Sir Arthur, who is the 11th baronet, entered the Grenadier Guards in 1931 and resigned in 1936. He saw service in Egypt. He proposes to spend several weeks in the Dominion, and hopes to do some trout fishing. Dr. H. S. Moore, medical superintendent of the Methodist Mission Hospital, in Shuipow, China, arrived by the Wanganella from Sydney accompanied by Airs. Aloore. They will spend a few weeks of their furlough in New Zealand before proceeding to Great Britain. Mrs. Moore was formerly Miss Jean McNeur, daughter of the Rev. G. H. McNeur, who has spent over 30 years in China. Air. E. D. McNeill, soil of Air. and Airs, James AlcNeill, Collingwood, has accepted a position as travelling representative in London and the South of England for the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board. Air. AlcNeill, who was formerly on the staff of the Invercargill Savings Bank, left Ihvcrcargill three years ago and has had experience in London and various parts of England with Swift and Company, Chicago meat packers.
