Foxton
From Our Own Correspondent. Farewell to Mr and Mrs W. M. Thomas. Representatives of local bodies, sports bodies and all sections of the community gathered to send-off Mr and Mrs W. M. Thomas. Mr Thomas was manager of the Commercial Bank of Australia. Ltd. Captain J. R. Middleton, R.N., (deputy Mayor) presided in the unavoidable absence of the Mayor (Mr M. E. Perreau). An enjoyable social time was spent, the guests of the evening being showered with good wishes. Captain Middleton welcomed Mr and Mrs Thomas to the gathering and escorted them to seats provided on the stage, together with the Mayoress. Mrs Thomas was presented with a bouquet. Both Mr and Mrs Thomas had proved themselves to be citizens of the calibre no town could afford to lose. They had taken a keen and active part in all phases of the community’s life, Mr Thomas occupying himself with local body life and finding time to assist with any social function, and Mrs Thomas being an active member of the various ladies’ organisations in the town. Mr S. R. Austin (president of the Foxton United Sports Association) referred to the excellent assistance rendered that body by Mr Thomas. Mr F.-Robinson voiced the appreciation of the Foxton District High School committee of the services rendered by Mr Thomas as a committeeman Mrs D. R. Barron spoke on behalf of the Women’s Institute and the Drama Circle. Mr W. Trueman (president of the Foxton Bowling Club) spoke of the untiring efforts of Mr Thomas as secretary of that body, and also made reference to the work done and assistance given by Mrs Thomas in church matters. Mrs E. Titcombe (vice-president of the Foxton District High School Parents. Association), thanked Mr Thomas for his assistance in forming the Association and filling the position of treasurer. Captain Middleton asked Mr and Mrs Thomas to accept a handsome brass screen and a cheque, and on beralf of the community extended to them all best wishes for the future. Musical honours were then accorded the guests of the evening. Mr Thomas, in his acknowledgement, said that they regretted their departure very much and thanked one and all for the many kindnesses shown them. Their earnest wish was that Foxton should prosper. A presentation of a book of plays was then made to Mrs Thomas by Mrs D. R. Barron* on behalf of the Drama Circle. Mrs Thomas returned thanks and urged members of the community to take an interest In this organisation which had been so successful in the past.
