ROWING EIGHT IN HARD TRAINING Per Pres* Association WANGANUI, Last Night. With barely a week left to complete its training prior to embarkation for Sydney and the Empire Games the New Zealand rowing eight has been losing no opportunity of equipping itself as well as possible for its hard task in Australia. Coach F. H. Ayres, of Christchurch, it has been out on the river daily rowing iu the morning and afternoon both, and there are definite signs of improvement since coaching first begun.

When the crew took the water for the first row local critics were sceptical of its reaching the standard required but the last day or so has knocked off many rough edges resulting in a much better and more rhythmic swing. Some members at the start were inclined to put a great deal of energy into their strokes but to use less than the full blade width of the oar. A notable exception was A. Jackson who liaa cultivated a style which while very effective looks remarkably easy. Styles, of Christchurch, is also shaping very well. Although no official announcement has been made as yet it is generally accepted here that the actual eight to row in Sydney will comprise in order from stroke to bow as follows: R. Gould (Union, Wanganui), stroke; F. T. Thompson (Christchurch), C. A. 6tyles (Christchurch), A. K. G. Jackson (Union), H. Benge (Union), J. Charters (Union), O. W. Denison (Auckland) and L. H. Pitbie (Dunedin) bow; with W. Stodart (Union) as cox. C. E. C. Johnston (Dum Jin) and P. Stowers (Aramoho, Wanganui) in the event of the ; eight named being chosen will accompany the crew to Sydney as emergencies.
