£l7 Obtained from Elderly Woman
FALSE PRETENCE ALLEGED. "This man obtained £l7 from an elderly woman by representing that he had £SOO invested in a betting or bookmaking syndicate, and that it was earning him £25 a week," declared Detective-Sergeant A. B. Meiklejohn in tho Magistrate's Court at Palmerston North yesterday when Truman Wiltshire, labourer and clerk, 33 years of age, was charged that with intent to defraud he obtained £l7 from Amy Ester Remnant by falsely representing that he was investing £SO for her and that it would earn her £4 a week for 12 months. A further charge was that at Ohakune, ou December 23, ho forged a cheque for £ls, purporting to be drawn on the Bank of New Zealand by W. S. Baird. Mr Meiklejohn said Wiltshire had induced the woman to part with £l7 and was going back for the other £33 to-day. Mr G. I. McGregor appeared for accused, who was remanded until Monday next. Messrs D. J. Lovelock and C. L. Mowlem, J.P.'s, were on the Bench.
