■CANDIDATE FOR ENGLAND PENDING INTER-STATE MATCH TRIAL FOR THE STARS When New South Wales and Queensland enter the field at Brisbane on November 5, candidates—the salted and the new men—for places in the Australian cricket team for England will be under fire of the opposition and the critics, comments the Referee. At least two Queenslanders, in W. A. Brown and D. Tallon, besides several from Sydney, will come into the firing line. This fact adds to public interest in the match.

N.S.W. selectors in determining the twelve to visit Brisbane did not include a slow leg-break bowler, inde-

pendently of Chipperfield. They have left out H. C. Chilvers, who figured in only one match last season, when he secured 4 for 2 and 0 for 95 against England in the second match. Nevertheless, the bowling is good in quality and variety. The team looks impressive in batting, sa/e that most of them are not established run-getters in first-class cricket. They are: S. J. McCabe, captain (North Sydney), S. Barnes (Petecsnnm), R. Beattie (Newcastle), A. G. Chcetham (Balmain), A. G. Chipperfield (Northern District), J. H. Fingleton (Waverley), L. C. Hynes (Gordon), V. Jackson (Waverley), J. G. Lush (North Sydney), W. A. Oldfield (Gordon), W. J. O’Reilly (S. George), E. S. White (North Sydney;. If Barnes is able to play, he will help to make the batting still more interesting to Brisbane supporters. They will miss the mercurial cricket of Ray Robinson, who made two centuries against Queensland last season, with 163 and 26 at Brisbane, and 0 and 143 in Sydney. In Brisbane A. Marks scored 48 and 57, and L. Fallowfield 19 and 26. Their places are being taken by S. J. McCabe and J. H. Fingleton. Barnes and R. Beattie are also new batsmen to Brisbane. Though youthful, it is a well-bal-anced side. Under an able captain in S. J. McCabe, they will test the home team. Last season, Queensland went very close to winning the corresponding match, after being 190 runs behind on the first innings (132 and 322). They came to light with 416 in the second innings, D. Tallon 100, C. W. Andrews 85, Gordon Amos 93, and R. K. Oxenham 50 not out. Amos is in Sydney, playing with Balmain, and Oxenham is recovering from a severe motor accident. A. G. Cheetham has not played against Queensland in Brisbane. He may open with Fingleton. If he gets a start, his cricket should be very interesting to Brisbane watchers at the pickets. His best effort last summer was seen in Sydney against Victoria, when he made 49 and 62 quite impressively. J. G. Lush has been bowling for his club on easy-paced wickets. If the brisbane pitch has the pace he should

make the ball travel, and perhaps fly. Three times last season he captured five or more wickets in an innings, with 5 for 74 against Victoria in Melbourne, and 6 for 43 and 7 for 72 against England in Sydney. Lush is a -much better batsman than any other fast bowler New South Wales has had. Queensland had some very bright hours last season, though there was a falling-off in batting in later matches. Tallon’s best innings were 100 against New South Wales, 101 against South Australia, and 96 against New South Wales.

W. A. Brown may run into his top form. If he does it will be very popular in centres beyond Queensland. G. Cook developed solid form in the second half of last season, during which he made 72 and 70 in Sydney, and 32 and 51 not out in the return with Victoria. Cook also bowled so steadily that he looks like taking up the all-round mantle of Ron Oxenham for the State.
