Locust Swarms in N.S.W.
Crawling Mass on Huge Front WORST PLAGUE FOR 35 YEARS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph. - Copyright. Received Monday, 8.55 p.m. SYDNEY, November 1. Wheat growers and graziers in this State are facing serious losses, owing to a plague of grasshoppers which has become a crawling mass on a huge front, devastating north-west- New South Wales. Extensive tracts of grazing land have been eaten out in a few weeks, days or hours, according to the density of the swarms. Stock inspectors describe it as the worst plague in 35 years. Nothing but an act of God is capable of checking the pest. Tons of poisoned bran and flamethrowers are being used to eradicate the grasshoppers, but with little success. Reports from southern New South Wales indicate a similar state of affairs has arisen there, causing the utmost concern to smal lfarmers as well as to Government officers, who are co-operat-ing in efforts to find an effective way of dealing with the pest.
