FEILDING STOCK SALE
Fat Sheep Market Recovers HIGH PRICES FOR EWE HOGGETS STRONG TONE IN BEEF MARKET Entries in the several sections at the Feilding live stock sale yesterday were generally moderate. In the fat sheep section there was a slight recovery on last week's notable collapse but tho activity was hardly as strong as was anticipated in view of the refreshing rains. A very short supply of store sheep found the market very firm with a decidedly strong tone for owe hoggets which yesterday made up to £2 4s 6d. In the beef section run cattle sold well up to late rates, while ex-dairy sorts experienced n particularly buoyant market at hardening values. Store run cattle were yarded in limited numbers and the sales made were at late rates with a firming tendency. Recent rains have encouraged pasture growth and the indications are that cattle are likely to be dearer in the near future. There will not be a sale next week and the intervening fortnight will probably witness considerable activity in the store cattle market at prices in excess of late quotations. Business in the dairy cattle section was quite firm but the quality of the offering was, as usual, very mixed. The offering of fat sheep numbered just short of 1000 head, being made up of 240 hoggets, 80 wethers and almost COO ewes. The quality was generally good and the market, although at times inclined to be erratic, showed a recovery on last week's collapse. Most of the entries were shorn and in some instances it was rather difficult to reconcile the prices of sheep In the wool and the shorn lots. An illustration of this occurred in the case of wethers, a pen of 28 woolly sheep, good fleeces and in forward condition, selling at 34s lOd. Immediately following this sale a pen of three shorn wethers, in prime condition, well finished, sold at 345. It was a poser for both sellers and buyers for there was not that difference between the meat value of the woolly wethers and the shorn sheep. Bidding on the hoggets opened rather cautiously and the first pen of 35 woolly sheep, offered on account of P. J. Kerrigan, was passed in at 29s fid and subsequently sold at 30s. They were a nice line but unfinished from the meat value. Two pens of nice blackfaces, numbering 4S, were passed in at 23s 9d. For a pen of 25 shorn hoggets, inclined to be leggy but with medium to good carcases, offered on account of W. Ward, realised 25s 4d. On account of J. S. Thomas a pen of 12 woolly hoggets changed hands at 29s 4d. Sixteen light weight shorn hoggets on account of K. Three shorn heavy weight wethers, offered on account of L. Millward, sold at the firm price of 345. Ten small wethers, unfinished, but otherwise in good condition, offered on account of W. Ward, realised 2Ss. A nice line of 39 whiteface wethers in good order realised 30s. Good shorn ewes appreciated round about 2s a head, while values for good woolly lines showed little variation on last week's values. Entries in the store cattle section were largely confined to boner cows and young dairy stock. A short supply of run cattle found the market fairly active, with indications of a strengthening.
