Tokomaru

From Our Own Correspondent. At the October meeting of the Tokomaru Women’s Institute, the president, ; Mrs Mac Nab, presided over a good attendance. Mrs Waring Taylor, of Shannon, was a visiting member. Interesting discussions on Institute matters took place. The monthly competition, four plain biscuits. was won by Mrs Mac Nab. witr Mra H. Parr second. A noVelt.y competition was won by Mrs Osman. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs Cheer and 1 Airs Claridge. At the monthly card afternoon organised by the Women’s institute. Mrs Claridge was successful in winning the first prize, and Mrs B. Wilton the consolation. School Committee. The chairman, Air R. W. Guy. presided at the October meeting of the school committee, other members present being Messrs L. Jamieson, N. J. Whyte, S. M, , Ryder, S. D. Lloyd, and the head teacher. Air W. Bond, who reported that the roil number now slpod at 87. The average taken for the school grading lor 1938 was 88.6, this placing'’ the school at grade C 3 for next year. A wash-basin is to be installed in the corridor and a bubble fountain for drinking purposes is to be erected outside. A new tennis net is to be purchaseed. The dental nurse has commenced Work bn the pupils of the school. General and Personal. Two rinks of bowlers from the Orient Lodge, Palmerston North, journeyed to 1 Tokomaru to play a match with two rinks from Lind Lodge for the Friendly Soci- ! cty’s Indoor Bowls Shield. The visitors proved, to be the winners of both games, the scores being 21—14. and 27—13. One rink from Lind Lodge went to Palmerston North on Labour Day to play in the Friendiy Society's indoor bowls tournament and were successful in gaining third place. The friends of Air A. Wilton will be pleased to learn that he is progressing favourably and will shortly be able to resume his usual occupation. Airs S. D. Lloyd is an inmate of the ! Palmerston North Hospital. Her friends i will wish her a speedy recovery, i' Mr and Airs 11. Burge and their eldest daughter, Mrs Keighly and grandson, Rex Keighley, of Hastings, have been spending a holiday with relatives in Tokomaru. Airs A. Jones and her daughter, Norma, of Hastings, were visitors to Tokomaru 1 last week-end.
