Raid on Chinese Den
LARGE STJM OF MONEY FOUND NELSON, Oet. 28. The first raid on opium-smoking promises in the Nelson district was carried out by the police on a dwelling house at Hope last night. As a result, seven Chinese appeared in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. Two were charged with management of premises used for opium-smoking, and others with being found unlawfully on the premises. Two of the latter, Percy Yee and Yeo Bing, pleaded guilty and were fined £5 each. The rest were remanded on bail. The police stated that over £SOO was found on the Chinese, also a quantity of smoking paraphernalia on the premises, which were evidently the headquarters for the Nelson district. SEAT,IAN FINED £125 WELLINGTON, Oct. 28. Caught by a plainclothes constable after leaving tho Wanganella, Steve Verandich, aged 36, a was searched at the Customs office and was found to have two tins of prepared opium tied to his right leg and one to his left. Letters in Chinese were found in his cabin and were used in evidence. Verandicb was convicted and fined the minimum of £125, in default three months’ imprisonment.
