MEETING OP THE COUNCIL The Palmerston North City Council met last night, the Mayor (Mn A. E. Mansford) presiding. Others present were Crs. W. B. Cameron, J. llodgen3, M.P., W. B. Teunent, R. L. C. Aitchison, J. T. J. Heatlev, A. A. Langley, G. Tremaine and R. L. C. Aitchison. Leave of absence was granted Cr. W. Mouldev, who is at present ill. The Terrace End Progressive Association wrote forwarding congratulations on the steps taken to acquire and beautify the railway pit at Terrace End, and advising that the proposals and plan wero unanimously approved by tho association, which desired to express appreciation of tho result of the survey by the city engineer and city curator. The engineer was instructed to seal tho entrance to McArthur street from the edge of the paved surface of Church street to half-a-chain beyond the alignment, at an estimated cost of £23, and to report on the number of similar intersections in the city. Instructions were given for the strengthening of the Mayor’s room, renovating the interior of same and the committee room, at an estimated cost of £GS. The Department of Labour advised chat it had approved of tho payment of a subsidy of 100 per cent, of the labour cost in respect of the employment of 25 registered and eligible unemployed married men in the preparation of an extension to the Sportsground, the work to be rotated eight-weekly and so arranged as to give full-time employment of four months’ duration to 75 men for a period of twelve months. It was resolved to thank the Department for its offer, and to advise it that the estimate of time for th- employ.. ent of 25 men was six to eight months, but that there would, no doubt, be other works upon which the men could be employed by the council on the basis of 100 per cent, subsidy being available. The Air Department, Civil Aviation Branch, wrote stating that it has been reported by the aerodrome engineer that the present condition of the tarmac at Milson was dangerous. It was decided that the Department be advised that the council had no funds available to enable it to provide a hot mix carpet, and owing to present climatic conditions, it would be impossible to obtain the results desired, but that every effort would be made to remove tho loose chips. The abattoir manager (Mr. A. M. Spilman) presented the following -cturn for July: Stock slaughtered, cows 312, heifers 115, bullocks 69, calves 14, ewes 808. wethers 707, lambs 18, pigs 109; stock condemned, cows 12, sheep 7, pigs 2; fees received £332 Is 3d. The poundkeeper (Mr. R. Toms) reported that he had impounded nine head of stock during July, fees received totalling 19s.
