Foxton
From Our Own CorresDondent. Work for Unemployed. Considerable time was taken up at the monthly meeting: of the Foxton Borough Council in discussing the matter of finding suitable work for Foxton’s unemployed. The Clerk (Mr W. Trueman), reported on a conference of local body representatives convened by the Minister of Labour (Hon. P. Webb) held In Palmerston North last week and attended by the Mayor (Mr M. E. Perreau) himself, to discuss ways and means of finding employment for the men in lieu of. paying sustenance. The position was that Foxton was practically the only local body that was continuing employing men under the No. 5 scheme. Other local bodies had given the scheme up some time ago ana thrown the men on sustenance. The Goverenment now felt alarmed at so many men being on sustenance and was beginning to feci that sustenance was wrong in principle, in view of this it was now emphasising the fact that men on sustenance must be taken off it. The position to-day as far as Foxton was concerned, added Mr Trueman, was that the La-
bour Department was finding £l3- per week and the men worked for that amount. “The Minister’s proposal was for us to take 30 men at £4 per week and the balance would then have to go on sustenance,” said Mr Trueman, "meaning that sustenance would be introduced into Foxton for tho first time.” The Mayor said that they had made their position quite clear to the Minister and had suggested that Government assist tho Council to find the money necessary to carry out a road and streets improvement programme as discussed at a previous meeting of the Council, but he had held out little hope in that connection. After a lengthy discussion. Crs. Barron and Chaffey moved the following resolution: “That tho Council is prepared to take twenty men at the £4 per week subsidy offered by the Government and that it commence the following programme oi works on July 9: Union street deviation footpath; Wharf street road sealing; Liddell street and Ravensworth Place road sealing; and road sealing of tho following: Duncan street, Whyte street.
