Cigarette cards have a definite appeal to the young, but it is nearly always the case that the urge for securing collections is but a passing phase, and is entirely lost when some other interest presents itself. Such, however, is not the case with Mr. Jack Murtagh, a 24-year-old shop assistant of 625 Nelson ; street, Hastings, who, for the past 11 : 1 years, since ho was 13 years of age, ; has amassed the huge collection of | something like 120,000 individual cards. j These he stores in about 350 albums and some 65 tightly-packed boxes. The collection is valued at £2OO. _ Arrested on w«uiaui uuiu -Auckland for allegedly failing to provide his wife with maintenance, Alfred Albert Poik- . inghorne, shopkeeper, 56 years of age, j appeared before Mr J. L. Btout, W.M., in j the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston I North yesterday. The police asked for j a remand for accused to appear at i Auckland next Thursday but Mr T. 1\ { Rolling opposed this. He said the war- ! rant had been issued without a prior summons, and produced a receipt from a j firm of solicitors showing that maintenance had been paid up to July 13 j Polkinghorne also said that a few months ago he gave his wife a house worth £I2OO or £ISOO, and she was adequately provided for. If he was compelled to leave Palmerston North it would prejudice his business which he recently commenced. A remand to appear at Palmerston North next Wednesday was finally granted with the consent of the police.
