The Otaki Borough Council on Thurs-, day night accepted an agreement with the New Zealand Picture Co., for the lease of the new theatre, which is likely to be erected at the end of the year. Carpenters are at present engaged at the Palmerston North railway station erecting a refreshment booth at the northern end of the platform for the convenience of through passengers when trains pull up at that end of the station. A goods train which had difficulty in negotiating a grade in the vicinity of Manakau last evening, was responsible tor the holding up of tiie north-bound Limited and Field's express. The latter was side-tracked to allow the Limited to get through 15 minutes behind schedule, while Field’s arrived in Palmerston North an hour behind time. Cigarette cards have a definite appeal to the young, but it is nearly always the case that the urge for securing collections is but a passing phase, and is entirely lost when some other interest presents itself. Such, however, is not the case with Mr. Jack Murtagh, a 24-year-old shop assistant of 625 Nelson ; street, Hastings, who, for the past 11 : 1 years, since ho was 13 years of age, ; has amassed the huge collection of | something like 120,000 individual cards. j These he stores in about 350 albums and some 65 tightly-packed boxes. The collection is valued at £2OO. _ Arrested on w«uiaui uuiu -Auckland for allegedly failing to provide his wife with maintenance, Alfred Albert Poik- . inghorne, shopkeeper, 56 years of age, j appeared before Mr J. L. Btout, W.M., in j the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston I North yesterday. The police asked for j a remand for accused to appear at i Auckland next Thursday but Mr T. 1\ { Rolling opposed this. He said the war- ! rant had been issued without a prior summons, and produced a receipt from a j firm of solicitors showing that maintenance had been paid up to July 13 j Polkinghorne also said that a few months ago he gave his wife a house worth £I2OO or £ISOO, and she was adequately provided for. If he was compelled to leave Palmerston North it would prejudice his business which he recently commenced. A remand to appear at Palmerston North next Wednesday was finally granted with the consent of the police.
