Takaro Progressive Association

The general committee of the Takaro Progressive Association met at the residence of Mrs. J. Denham on Tuesday, Mr. E* H. Smith presiding. Others | present were Messrs. J. Wass, P. G. Brookie, G. H. Jarrett, E. C. Hammond, A. Cooksley, J. H. C. Silk, Mesdames E. H. Smith, J. Denham, D. Evans, G. H. Jarrett and R. Packer. Before commencing the business of the meeting, the chairman paid a tribute to the memory of the late Mr. N. H. Nash, a motion of condolence with relatives being passed. The sympathy of the meeting was extended to Mr. W. Loveday, ot Bryant street, in the recent loss of his wife, also to Mrs. J. Wass, of Chelwood street, in the loss of her brother, tho meeting standing as a mark of respect. It was remarked that the children’s basketball court was now ready.to play on, games having been indulged m. (The girls were very pleased with the facilities provided by the council and association. A vote thanks for his work in making tne goal-posts was | passed to Mr. H. Bird. Thanks were i ; due to Mr. and Mrs. Foster and Mr. [Jarrett for help in this matter, s j The chairman said he had talked . , over the question ol entrances to the ; I park with Mr. Black. On discussion, j the ideas were considered practical. > | Mr. Cooksley recalled a few instances of children hurting themselves when . ! jumping over chains which used to en- : circle the Square gardens, suggesting 5 ! that perhaps a low concrete fence in L | place of the chains might be better. 3 llt was decided to ask the council if j possible to tar-Beal the footpath at the Chelwood street entrance in the immediate future. Dealing with a letter 3 from the council regarding the flooding of tho railway end of Burns avenue, it ! was decided to again approach the j 1 council on this matter as this flooding 7 had been as recent at April last. t j Dealing with the tar-sealing programme to be carried out during the j I ensuing year, wherein the council defined the streets to be sealed in the [Takaro area, it was decided to point ! out to the council that these streets were not in what is popularly considered the district of Takaro, at the same ' time to ask that any surplus from the fund be expended in the Takaro area. ( The filling-in of the dram in Botanical road and general improvement being r carried out to this part of the district | was much appreciated by tho association. It was decided to again apjjroacn the Wanganui Educatio* Board regarding school facilities. The breahing ? away of the kerbing and footpath in Kingswood street at the intersection of F therstone street wus remarked on, \ it being decided to call the council’s attention to this. “ Residents had asked if it were pos--1 sibio to have anotiiei bus shelter erected in the district, the corner of Lynd- ’ hurst and Cuba streets being suggested 1 as a site. On discussion, it was decided to ask the council to give favourable ) consideration to this matter. Mr. Hammond pointed out that the small strip of roadway in front of the Chelwood street shops needed tar-seal-ing, as m summer the dust entered shops which supplied food, and in wet J weather it became decidedly muddy. ' It being a bus stop, tne municipal buses i were inclined to puli up close in to j oblige passengers, thus the water-table 3 was in danger of being broken away. „ The matter of donating seats to be | placed in tho children s playing area in the park was discussed. Mr. Jarrett and I Mr. Cooksley were appointed to go into tho matter of seats suitable for the i p .rpose with power to purchase. It I I was also decided to ask the council to _ ! plant trees in this area suitable for shade. A stamp-vending machine had j been a long-felt want in the district, j On discussion, it wa~ decided to approach the postal authorities for further r postal facilities, particularly a stampvending machine. Final arrangements for the annual i re-union, to be heid this month, were a gone into. The chairman expressed satisfaction at the big increase in the membership. Last year's membership , had been 274, while this year’s had so 3 far reached a total of 309, a very £ pleasing state of affairs.
