From the Hub
DEAR COGS, Can it be true that you have vanished once more into Holiday Land? What fortunate little people you are! I do hope you catch all the sunshine there is and store up interesting experiences to pass on to the big family. And talking of passing on reminds me of something I want to pass on about the * ‘early bird’ It is always fascinating to watch a thrush on the lawn running a few steps and then stopping with its head on one side. This is what Mr. Johannes Anderson, Parliamentary Librarian and ornithologist had to say about it in the course of a recent lecture: —“The popular idea is that the bira is listening, but as a matter of fact the thrush is looking, the position of its eyes being such that it has to cock its head to one side to see clearly. Really, it is watching a worm hole for a sign of the worm which has come up its tunnel during the night and is enjoying the early warmth before descending again. .The birds know each worm hole, and it really is the case of the ‘early bird catches the worm.’ The late-comcr will find the holes have all been visited and will go empty away. .You will see large numbers of worms left stranded on your garden paths after rain, but the birds will disdain to touch these, they prefer their worms fresh.’’ Now isn’t that an interesting contribution? Don’t forget the Spring page Cogs! Here’s to a joEy holiday' Your friend, THE HUB.
