Great Fields Engaged at Hastings

SINGLE-POOL BETTING. Tie Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club’s annual meeting will be held on the Hastings racecourse to-day, and if the acceptances for the seven-race programme axo to bo taken as an indication, tfce club and racing enthusiasts are in lor an interesting day. The course will provide excellent winter going and fine finishes may be anticipated. The betting will be conducted under the single- j pool system and the first race is timed to start at noon. The opening event is the Qtane Hack and Hunters' Hurdle Handicap over a mile and a half. Contact is topweight and Werohia, an interesting entrant is in receipt of 41b. Though there is a possibility of a surprise packet, the chances are that the betting will point to j Iddo and Contact Another good field will parade for the Okawa Maiden. Mon Ace, Marching On, Seattle, Seacourt, Triplex and Thala have shown ability to gallop and as they have been working well they should be assured of support, with preference, possibly, for Triplex, Marching On and Seacourt The Hawke's Bay Hunt Club Steeplechase will be fought out over about two miles and a half and there should be a fine exhibition of jumping. Miss Pango is at the head of the weights, but she l is a doubtful starter. Dozie and Wyke- ' mist are next on the list and Wykemist is likely to find moro favour than Dozie. [Cotsfield has the handy weight of 10.2. ; lie was favourite for the steeplechase at j Dannevirko and finished fourth after being in front for about two miles. The going on that day was heavy and Cotslield is likely to be more at homo today. The Ranger had a run at Dannevirko and then ran a good second to Tngled in the Manawatu Hunt Cup over about 2$ miles. He is a good jumper and a nice mover and any improvement on his Manawatu form will make him a hard proposition for the ' others to-day. Count Willonyx is an- ! other that will be a possibility, for he j beat all but Sleepy in the Dannevirke ! Steeples, the pair of them finishing 1 much too solidly for the others. Tho | remainder will have to be taken on i trust and the betting may point most strongly to The Banger, Cotsfield and Count Willonyx. There are seven acceptors for the Riverslea Hack, which will be run over a mile and a quarter, and it is on tho cards that the punters will look to the first page of the card for the winner, with most support for Umpire, Trailer and Hamarin Tho field for the Soutra Hunters’ Flat Handicap, the event for gentlemen riders, is a good one. Cletrac won this event at Manawatu after Aube, whe had received a bad smack at the start, ■ was unable to go on with it for more than about seven furlongs. Aube, how ever, won a double at Dannevirke, and tho favourite to-day may be Cletrac or Aube I Tho Waitangi Hack will be contested by a field of smart sprinters and the best backed may be Colleen Gain and Buster Brown The day will be brought to a close with the Tikokino Handicap, a fluttei over <SJ furlongs. There are ten accep tors and the issue is very open. fc>hu Hunter's Morn, Slippery, Blygaiu Solaria, Quake and Buufight will al have to be considered, but the favour ites may be Hunter’s Morn, Solaria, Blygain THE ACCEPTANCES. 12.0 OTANE HACK AND HUNTERS’ HURDLE HANDICAP, of £6O.
