Nine Months’ Increase
The current meat exporting season is drawing to a close and, granted a continuation of the present favourable prospects, production, for the season should show a slight increase on the previous period. Shipments from New Zealand for the nine months of the season to June 30 show an increase of about 3 per cent on the corresponding period in the 1935-36 season. Only two classes of frozen meat show a decline, mutton and frozen beef, according to returns just issued by the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board. Mutton shipments dropped from 1,325,442 carcases to 1,098,476 carcases, while exports of frozen beef were 97,418 quarters, compared with 148,228 quarters in the same period of the previous season. Lamb shipments have risen from 6,474,892 carcases in the previous season to 6,730,208 carcases. Chilled beef exports at 142,745 quarters compare with 112,109 quarters, while figures for boneless beer were i 58,374 Dags, as against 153,821 bags. A total of 432,923 carcases of pork was shipped, against 164,550 carcases. but the reserves were above buyers’ limits and the offerings were passed in. The market was generally firm and ex dairy sorts found a ready sale at values disclosing a slight appreciation on last week’s quotations. The following are the quotations:—Run cows, £6 10s, £6 15s, £7 15s, £S 15s to £8 17s 6d; ex dairy sorts, £3 ss, £3 15s, £4, £4 ss, £4 7s Od, £4 10s, £4 12s 6d, £4 15s, £5, £5 ss, £5 15s, £5 17s 6d, £6 17s 6d to £7; heifers, £4 10s, £4 12s 6d, £5 10s to £S; Jersey steers, £5 15s to £6 103; A.A. steers, £S 12s 6d; runners, £4 2s; vealers, £2 5s to £2 17s tid. Activities in tho store cattle section were confined to the boner cow business and tlio disposal of odd entries of weaner heifers. No run cattle were offered. For both classes of stock the market was firm on late rates. Quotations are as follows;—Cows, 37s 6d, £2, £2 ss, £2 7s, £2 Ss, £2 11s, £2 12s 6d, £2 15s, £2 17s, £3, £3 2s 6d, £3 ss, £3 7s 6d, £3 Ss, £3 10s, £3 11s, £3 12s 6d, £3 13s; weaner heifers, 31s, 365, 37s Gd, £2 10s, £2 13s, £2 17s to £3; empty heifers, £2 2s. The dairy stock market registered increasing interest and a keen demand for those offerings showing quality. At 1 times the bidding was very spirited and values advanced ou current quotations. Realisations were as follows:—Springing heifers, £3 8s 6d, £3 12s 6d, £3 17s 6d, £4, £4 7s Cd, £5, £5 10s, £6, £6 10s, £G 15s, £7, £S 10s to £9 9s; springing cows, £2 10s, £3 10s, £4, £5, £5 ss, £5 12s 6d, £5 15s, £6, £G ss, £6 10s, £6 15s, £G 17s Gd, £7 to £7 10s.
