Bu.aED OF DIRECTORS MEET Tho monthly meeting of the board of directors of tho Y.M.C.A. was held od Wednesday evening, when there was present Mr A. W. Yortt (chair), Messrs G. A. Elliott, L. A. Peters, G. Griggs, H. L. Cunningham©, J H Dick, D Rabone, B. R. Brown, and the general secretary. Apologies were received from Messres T. R. Hodder, L. L Plim i mer and Alexander Clark. The general secretary's report said; “At this time of tho year, the winter programme is at its maximum, and the activities show that the committees responsible are functioning smoothly. Practices have commenced for the gymnastic carnival, which this year will be presented in an entirely new form. The Opera House has been booked for October for this event. In main 1 taining our policy of organised visit to churches, a parade of members will be held next Sunday at All Saints' for the evening service. The Optimists’ Club, meeting for lunch each Tuesday, is enjoying a record season, the attendances being good. The speakers have been of a high standard. During the past month the club had as their speakers Mr E. Luke (‘‘A Scotch Mix lure”), Mr C. Rabone (“A Recent Visit to Australia”), Mr Low* (“China”). Interhouse basketball, games continued to create keen interest, the spectators' gallery crowded] each night to watch the play. The, teams generally are showing a decided improvement in their standard of play. '* Arrangements were made at this meeting for Red Triangle Day which will be held on Friday, July 30, when it is hoped that the public will subscribe generously to the work of the association. Tho boys' work secretary reported that activities in the boys' department had been very keen over the past month. Class attendances were good, and tho standard of games played was high. A regular programme of gar' l -, and inter-club contests was held, and the interest shown was high. Weekly talks of a character-training nature were given by the boys' work secretary to each group. In the sports field the Y.M.C.A. was represented by two soccer teams, meeting with a fair measure of success, and ono hockey team, which had been winning all its games to date. Basketball games were a big feature of the department, a competition now having been inaugurated in the primary group. Inter-club and inter-group games were productive of a very high standard of play. In the younger men's department, an excellent month’s programme had been featured. Speakers had been Mr E. R. Harris (“Newspapers”), and Mr Dast rupp (“Utah"), while play-reading and a treasure hunt had also contributed to the members’ enjoyment. A successful | visit had been made to the Wellington Y.M.C.A., when teams from that association had been played at basketball. A return visit is planned for the end of the month, when opportunity will be taken to entertain the visitors at a social and dance. An enjoyable picture party had been held, while a Ijrfcher one is contemplated for the neaT ' future.
