Too Comfortable
LONDON, May 29. According to a Winchester councillor, prisoners are complaining that they are too comfortable. They compare their lot favourably with that of their families outside. Mr H. Bristowe, member of the prison visitors, said that recently he saw a man in Winchester prison who had held a very high position, but who had made a slip after 23 years and had been gent to prison? for J2 months. “He said to me: ‘Do you know there is something wrong with this punishi meat system of ours. Here am I in a > warm, comfortable ceil, with electric light, a warm bed, all the books I want to read, and a congenial occupation of j the type I am used to. I can be equally j at home with a book whether I am in a 3 cell or a palace. Everything is provided for me—while my wife, who has done > no wrong, is having to suffer. I am not suffering. ’ *
