A second charge was that, on the same date, he was found without lawful excuse, but in circumstances not disclosing commission of, or intention to commit, any other crime, in premises a't 530 Church street. Holmes, who pleaded not guilty, was remanded until Monday at the request of the police. A survey, preparatory to the provision of roading and other amenities for the whole of the area to be utilised at West End for the erection of £Jtate houses, has commenced. Accompanied by Mr. A. H. Tyndall, Director of Housing, the Parliamentary UnderWecretary in charge pf Housing, Mr. J. A. Lee, M.P., paid a short visit to tne area on Wednesday. Mr. Lee was also accompanied by his private secretary (Mr. Temm) and was on his way to Wanganui and New Plymouth. At the Cook street block Mr. Lee was met by Mr. J. Hodgens, M.P., aud the party inspected the houses being erected tnere by Messrs. 11. E. Townshenu, Ltd. (Palmerston North) and Higgins and Arcus (Wellington). Mr. Lee expressed himself as being most pleased indeed with the progress being made and congratulated Mr. Townshend on the ex- { pedition with which he is chi tying forward the construction worx.
