From Our Own Correspondent. Borough Council. I The following were present at the fort- • nightly meeting of the Shannon Borough : Couoncll on Tuesday night: Councillors A. . E. Hyde (chair). W. I A letter was received from the N.Z. , I Municipal and General Workers’ Union, j asking for the names of ail employees of 31 the Council and their classification, which II Information nas been forwarded to them. • | The Valuation Department forwarded a . 1 form of declaration to be made to entitle l tho Council to receive a subsidy for the • rates collected during the year 1936-37, • and the Town Clerk reported that this l matter had been attended to. The Direc- . lor of Housing Construction acknows lodged receipt of schedules and plan in i connection with the housing survey of the borough. In regal'd to the proposed work in tho district for the unemployed, a com--1 munication was received from Mr C. L. , Hunter, M.P., thanking the Council for . their suggestions and stating that he • would lane this matter up with the Minister in due course. j Cr. ll.vde reported that he had attend- ! ed a meeting of local bodies’ representai! tives in Palmerston North, when the acting Minister of Labour had placed pro--1 pc sals before the local bodies to give lulltime work to men on sustenance for four months. The men would be required to work 40 hours weekly, and the Council would be required to arrange for the insurance of the men and for any material necessary for the work undertaken. Piunket Society. | The monthly meeting of the Shannon ’: branch of the Piunket Society was well ■ I attended, Mrs C. Easton being in the i! chair. Mclntosh and W. Aldersley. Tho latter won the count back, both piayers recording cards of 65 net. The ball competition was won by L. Easton, : with a good card of 63 net. Guerin, Curran, Beck, Aldersiey, Mercer and Hearsey. In the ladies’ section the July medal and L.G.U. ouiul played on Saturday, July 3, was won by Mrs Whyte. The following is the draw for the stroke competition to be played this Saturday: Miss jN. Easton v. Miss Grey; Aiiss E. Easton y. Miss Tremewan; Airs Pope v. Miss Hardin «■; Airs Elvines v. Airs Whyte; Airs Guerin v. Aiiss Picard; Airs Graham v. Miss Stern. Table Tennis. Judging by the attendance at the initial meeting on Tuesday night, convened by the Shannon branch of the N.Z. Labour Party for the purpose of lorming a Table Tennis Club in Shannon, the move should bo a success. For sumo time prior to the actual meeting, both tables were fully oc- , cupted and piay continued until about .! 10 p.m., though a later hour will be obi served in future.
