£200,000 Salt Plant Begun At Adelaide

ADELAIDE.—Work has begun on the construction of a base factory on the banks of the Pork Adelaide River for imperial Chemical Industries. This is part of a scheme for the production of alkalis from sea water by solar evaporation. Plans have been approved for the erection of about 20 buildings at a cost of nearly £200,000. Gradually the entire area of 2000 acres, walled in by 25 miles of ea'then boundary walls and subdivided into salt paddocks, will be flooded. The salt obtained by progressive solar evaporation and harvesting from the crystallizing pans will be purified, and after being redissolved into brine will be pumped underneath the river through a pipe line to the works at Osborne, where the alkalis will be produced.
