A FUTURE “PERRY’
FORM OF U. A. SHAYES. At Queen’s Club in March R. A. Shayes corroborated the indication given recently that under certain conditions of training he might be the most likely candidate for the vacant place in singles in our Davis Cup | teams, writes J. E. Collett In The Field. | Shayes beat J. S. Olliff in the semifinal of the men’s singles, ‘>—6. 6—l, ,6—2, B—6. The score indicates the ! fluctuations to which his game is subject. In the fourth set, in which he was at 5—4 and 5—6, he showed an increase of fighting quality under pressure and a growing ability to control a tendency to petulance at his own errors of timing. During the covered courts championships last October he beat N. Sharpe in straight sets. He therefore met him on Saturday last on the same court with added confidence. On tne other hand, Sharpe was on his home court, where he has von golden opinions in the past for firm fights against J. Borotra and other stalwarts of the wooden surface. So good has Sharpe been here that he has held for a long while the reputation of being our best covered court player. Shayes beat him for the second lime running, the score being 6—4,4—6,6—4, 6—4. To look at, Shayes is physically a battler of the Perry type, but he has not arrived at the hardness of heart and brain which made Perry so formidable.
