The Maori Triplets
GIVING THEM A PROPER START A desire to ensure the Maori triplets born at Hawera last week a correct start in life as far as health was concerned was expressed at a meeting of the Hawera Hospital Board. It was essential, it was stated, that the children should be given every opportunity of developing under hygienic conditions and the board decided that the chairman, Mr. A. L. Campbell, and the medical superintendent, Dr. W. S. Fogg, should endeavour to arrange for the triplets’ immediate welfare. Tho general desire was to see the children correctly started as far as health was concerned, said Mr. L. O. Hooker. Ho thought they should bo brought to the hospital, where the facilities were available to ensure that they received proper treatment. He advocated a period of three months, but pointed out that it might be necessary to keep them at the hospital for longer. The Mayor of Hawera, Mr. J. E. Campbell, was considering opening an appeal for funds, it was stated, and the managing secretary, Mr. Claude Harrison, reported that the appeal for clothing had met with a remarkable response. ‘‘There is very grave danger in permitting the children to go back to poor conditions,” said Mr. S. J. Bennetr. If the Mayor issued an appeal there might be sufficient funds to improve the home conditions, said Mr. I. Bridger. The mater was referred to Mr. Campbell and Dr. Fogg, who are to endeavour to make arrangements for their immediate welfare.
