New Fire Engine for City

BOARD PLACES ORDER WITH ENGLISH MANUFACTURERS WILL NOT ARRIVE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS One of the most important resolutions of the Palmerston North Fire Board at its quarterly meeting yesterday was that authorising the purchase of a new Leyland fire engine. The vehicle will be brought out from England and may not arrive for several months; after its arrival body building will bo completed from plans to be approved. Those present were the Mayor, Mr. A. E. MansfoTd, in the chair, Messrs. L. H. Oollinson, W. B. Cameron, V. M. Edgar, L. A. Hutton. Mr. Button was welcomed as a new member, and appreciation was recorded of the services of Mr. D. S. N. McCartney, whom ho succeeds, and who had been a member since 1931 as insurance companies' representative. During the present quarter there were 34 calls —10 actual fires, six chim neys, 12 false alarms (nine malicious), two rubbish, two hedges and grass, two cars, reported the superintendent, Mr. P. A. Milverton. The value of property involved was £28,345; insurance, £10,090; loss covered by insurance, £319 Ss; loss not covered by insurance, £42 10s. Painting of tlio station and quarters had been carried out. The motors were in good running order. The second year of operation in testing and servicing first aid appliances was now under way, and every effort was being made to place these machines in a satisfactory condition for instant use with safety and reliability. The brigade offered its services to owners of these machines. All staff members were in good health and carrying out their duties satisfactorily. Attention was again called to the great risk run at the A. and P. Showgrounds in tho event of fire occurring during the show period, concluded tho superintendent. It was decided to write to the A. and P. Association drawing attention, to tho risk of fire during show periods when crowds are in the halls. It was emphasised that there were not adequate water connections through tho grounds.
