MUSSOLINI’S CONFIDENT CLAIM WHY HE INTERVENED IN SPAIN Received Wednesday, 6.30 p.m. LONDON, May 26. The Daily Telegraph’s Brussels correspondent says Mussolini, in an interview in the Vingtieme Sieclo is reported to have said: “Italy in the Mediterranean is now in a position to resist all attacks. And I am not the only one to know it.” Peace, he added, would be in danger as long as the Spanish problem was not settled. He intended to publish a list of Italian losses in Spain “because I want our sacrifices for the defence of Europe against communism to be known.” End Must be Put To Europe’s Miseries GERMAN LEADER’S APPEAL TO FRANCE Received Wednesday, 10.30 p.m. PARIS, May 25. “What I say to those ruling France is that Germany considers an end must be put to a situation in which all the nations find themselves, ’ * declared Dr. Schacht, financial adviser to the German Government, addressing newspapermen on his arrival to open the German pavilion at the Paris exhibition. He added: “An end must be put to the miseries resulting from the Great War. All countries must make a common effort. Germany is ready to co-operate with nil nations of goodwill.”
