COUNCIL DEALS WITH VARIOUS MATTERS CHAIRMAN REELECTED FOR FURTHER TERM Capt. M. 0. Grainger (chairman) presided at yesterday’s meeting of the Woodville County Council. Others present were Councillors E. D. Cattunach, O. H. Druce, J. Galloway, H. Sheffield, R. T. Mabey, and R. H. Morgan. Cr. G. Peebles was granted leave of absence. Tho Transport Department advised that the Government printer would be forwarding a parcel containing booklets dealing with road code and traffic regulations, and asked that all applicants for drivers’ licenses should be handed a copy. The clerk (Mr Graham) reported that the booklets were to hand. The Makara County Council wrote seeking co-operation in an effort to get the proposed legislation amended to provide for a poll of taxpayers in regard to amalgamation of local bodies. —The chairman remarked that the resolution was ’on the lines of the one passed by tho Woodville Council at the last meeting. The following transfers were given effect to;—Public Trust to R. D. Galloway; Smith, McSherry, ltawson and Carruthers to A. Bonny. The N.Z. Counties’ Association forwarded copy of minutes of meeting of General Labourers’ Disputes Committee held in April and circular relating to industrial matters, also circular in reference to the King’s birthday. Tho Counties’ Association advised the conference would be held in Wellington on August 25, 26, and 2/, and that remits should be in by July 10.—The chairman was appointed to represent the county. Councillors’ Requirements Cr Mabey asked that steps be taken to indicate Jackson’s road. He advocated a signpost at Hopelands.—lt was resolved to get into touch with the Automobile Association. Cr Sheffield asked when the grader would be available for two of the Kumeroa roads, and the engineer said it wbuld not be long. ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting was held at noon and Capt. Grainger was re-elected chairman on the motion of Councillors Morgan and Druce. The Finance Committee was reelected with the addition of Cr Sheffield and travelling allowances were fixed in accordance with the requirements obtho Audit Department. The chairman’s honorarium was fixed as for last year. districts would never get the service they get under the present system. The chairman summed it up when ho said that if the ratepayers were given the say there would be no objection to the Bill. The report was adopted on the motion of Councillors R. H. Morgan and J. Galloway.
