WANTED TO RENT VXTANTED TO RENT, in Feilding, five or six-roomed house with conveniences; reasonable. Permanent tenant. Apply “ Times’’ Office, Feildlag. that various sums of money were missing, some from his wife’s purse and some from a pocket of one of his coats hung behind the kitchen door. A sovereign was missing from a drawer. Footprints were found on a garden plot from the gate to beneath a window, insido which the footprints were found in the house the previous night. The sovereign, which was in good condition, was dated about 1891. For sonu months previously accused had lived next door with his married sister. Coustable W. R. Miller, stationed at Foxtou, told the Court that in an interview Stevenson had admitted breaking and entering Crosbic’s house and taking tho money. Ho stated that he had pushed up the front window to get into the house. He took the money because he was anxious to pay off an amount owing on a suit. This, however, ho had not doiie. He went to Otaki a few days later to a tangi, and lost a £1 note there. At present he had no means of re-paying the money taken, but hoped to do so. When arrested, accused had 9s in his possession, which was all that remained of the money taken from the house, said tho constable. Stevenson entered a pica of guilty and -was committed to tho Supreme Court at Palmerston North for sentence on Monday next. On tho other charge, he pleaded guilty and was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within six months. Mr Meiklejohn explained that when, in connection with the housebreaking charge, Constable Miller had searched a house in Avenue road, Foxton, where accused and a Maori womau were living together as man and wife, the cloth was found. Apparently it had been taken in 1931 when accused was engaged as a presser. As to how he got it out of the workroom ho would say little, suggesting that another i>arty was implicated. The theft was charged for tho day on which the cloth was discovered. Accused had no previous criminal record.
