Maximum Hours Minimum Wages
Roosevelt’s New Labour Measure 40-HOUR WEEK POSSIBLE. United Press Association —By Electric Teleeraph.—Copyrucht. Received Tuesday, 9.10 p.m. WASHINGTON, May 25. President Roosevelt, in a special message, asked Congress to extend the frontier of social progress by enacting a maximum hour and a minimum wage law. A Bill embodying these aims was introduced in both Houses with the maxiniums and minimums yet unfixed. Tho sponsors hope a 40-hour week will be made the maximum with discretion given to five men on a Labour Standards Board to reduce it as low as 30 hours and a minimum of 40 cents per hour. The Bill would abolish all child labour under sixteen and prohibit inter-State transportation of goods produced, except under the conditions specified. The measure is similar to the N.R.A., but without the codes and fair business practices.
