Utilising Earthquake Legacy

STOCKING AHURIRI LAGOON. From Our Own CorrespondenL NAPIER, East Night. The stocking of the developed portions of the Ahuriri Lagoon will be commenced this week. Where at the time of the 1931 earthquake was u wide expanse of water, swamp and growth of various types 600 ewes in a tew days will be grazing over pastures sown a short time ago. An extensive programme of stocking, increasing in scope as the development of the Ahuriri Lagoon demands, is to be carried out. At the same time excellent progress is being recorded with the fencing of the southern portion of the lagoon. The scheme is rapidly reaching an advanced stage and it is anticipated that about 20 miles of ring fencing, to be finished within a year, will be required for the area. Recent rains have left their mark on the pastures sown recently and many acres of the lagoon are now covered in green sward, which is daily assuming more substantial proportions. The effect of the rain has been to allay for the time being fears that the pastures would deteriorate in tho absence of abundant moisture. At the northern extremity of the lagoon ploughing has been commenced on a small area of between 80 and 100 acres of land. This area is situated near the point at which the road leads to the quarantine reserve.
