Women’s Institutes

TABLE FLAT Table Flat celebrated the third birthday of the Institute in May, when the time was very happily occupied with social items. A feature of the afternoon tea was the handsome birthday cake which had been made and presented by Mrs Kearney. The competitions were for a bowl of berries and leaves, an eggless cake, and the prettiest article knitted from two skeins of wool, an infant's coat being the winning article. GLEN OROUA A social afternoon was the May programme at Glen Oroua, when there was an attendance of 45 members. Competitions were for seagrass stools and a bowl of brawn. KIMBOLTON Recounting some of her impressions of a recent visit to Rotorua, Mrs Barnicoat (president) held the attention of members very happily in May. Competitions for next month will be for best bloom in garden, two jars of preserved fruit, and spray of two roses in wood-pulp fibre. AWAHURI The attendance at the May meeting was rather smaller than usual, several members being away on holiday. Through the unavoidable absence of the president, a vice-president, Mrs A. H. Goodman, presided and cordially, welcomed all members and visitors. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs C. Thompson and Miss Henson, both having suffered bereavement. {Sincere regret was expressed to Mrs Simpson in her illness, and a letter expressing best wishes for her speedy recovery is to bo forwarded. Congratulations aro to be sent to Mrs A. McCorkindale, who 1 recently received a Coronation medal. I It was announced that an electric cooking demonstration would bo held on Tuesday, June 14, and neighbouring institute members had been forwarded an invitation. Members were reminded of the open evening meeting next month, when all members aro asked to help provide the supper. Mrs Neil Campbell gave a very detailed and interesting report of the half-yearly council meeting; Mrs Morcom, of Rongotea, i then gave a splendid demonstration on wood-pulp flowers. This was keenly followed. As several members decided to make some flowers, Mrs Morcom very kindly offered to come along and give them a lesson. This is to take place on Wednesday, Juno 3, at 1 p.m. A rollcall, ‘ ‘Children's strange or runny actions,'' caused much enjoyment. The flower competition resulted as follows: Miss Henson I, Miss Pearce 2, Miss Matthews 3. Sewing (plain slip): Miss Matthews 1, and Mrs Rowlands 2. One new member was welcomed. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames M. Bennett, Montgomerie, Misses Bennett and Bond. The meeting closed with the National Anthem.
