U.S. Davis Cup Players in Poor Form

OBSERVERS GETTING WORRIED United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—CopyrightReceived Monday, 11.30 p.m. NEW YORK, May 24. American observers are decidedly worried over the poor showing of the American Davis Cup team in the workouts. In an exhibition match at Glencove Sabin defeated Budge 6 —4, 6—4, but this was not so much cause for concern as the doubles match in which Budge and Mako won from Lott and Sabin 3 —6, 4 —6, 6 —4, 6 —4, 6—l. Budge was obviously not exerting himself against Sabin. However, in the doubles both he and Mako were trying hard but were guilty of plenty of orrors.

The choice of a player for the other singles assignment is proving difficult. Grant defeated Parker decisively on Saturday 6 —3, 6—2, 6 —l. Parker’s slump in form continued on Sunday, but despite many errors he and Grant tied. Grant won the first set 6 —l, Parker the second 6—2 and the score was 4—4 in the third when rain stopped play. American writers were outspoken in articles to-day in stating that America has no chance of winning unless the plAyers improve markedly. They also stated it was likely that the stadium would be filled to capacity on all three days due to the probability that the winner would not be decided until the final day. The Australian Davis Cup players returned by train early this evening after an over-night stay at the Moorestown Field Club where in exhibition matches yesterday Sproule and Bromwich defeated Crawford and Richards 6—4, ■6—3. The third set was halted at 6—6. Crawford defeated Bromwich 7—5, the second set being halted at 5—5. Sproule beat Richards 6—4.
