Post Office Tasks in May
ADVICE TO MOTORISTS. The re-licensing of over a quarter of a million motor vehicles is to be effected by the end of May, a month regarded by the post office officials as comparable with the Christmas rush period. Tho rush, however, can be lessened to the great convenience of motorists if re-licensing applications, which are now being accepted, are put in hand long before the inevitable last-day rush. As an encouragement to early action, the post office is prepared to arrange with owners of the larger fleets of vehicles to issue the necessary forms, assess the fees and allocate registration plates at any time during this month, tho transaction being completed by payment at any convenient date before May 31st. In all cases of re-licensing, owners are required to again indicate the engine and chassis numbers of the vehicles and they will find that the application form, which was considerably simplified last year, is unaltered. The charge for plates is again 2s per set, except in the cast of trailers where only one plate has to be affixed to the back of the vehicle, the cost being Is. No motor vehicle can be legally driven on the roads after May 31st without the new black and white registration plates, and fearing that congestion may occure, the post office is again issuing a reminder regarding the necessity for early action by motor owners. Its counter staffs, in addition to the task of handling over 250,000 motor registrations this month, are also busy with the annual declarations, of income other than salary or wages under tho Employment Promotion Act, while the quarterly Emergency Employment Levy of 5s is payable before the end of May by approximately 450,000 persons, all of whom have to visit the post office counter during the same time as the army of motor owners. These are special tasks for the month of May, but the post office is also busy at the same time with its normal work including, towards the end of the month, the payment of pensions and sustenance allowances, while its postal, telegraphic and telephonic services are so buoyant to-day that there is approximately 10 per cent, more business than last year.
