Nga Tawa and Wanganui Old Pupils' Combined Ball

“ONE OF THE SEASON’S BEST’' From Our Own Correspondent. HASTINGS, May 22. The spectacular decorations in the hall, together with the lovely gjowns worn by the women, gave an unforgettable brilliance to the annual combined ball of the Hawke’s Bay branches of the Nga Tawa Old Girls’ Association and the Wanganui Collegiate School Old Boys’ Association, which was held in the Hastings Assembly Hall last evening. No effort had been spared to make the evening a success, and many hundreds of dancers voted the ball one of the season’s best. The decorative scheme had been very cleverly carried out to combine the colours of tho two associations, the brown and gold of Ngja Tawa and the blue, yellow and black of Wanganui. All along the front of the stage, the balcony and the orchestral dais were massed gold and brown chrysanthemums and autumn foliage, while on the stage were large bowls of chrysanthemums in yellow and brown with golden leaves, black berries and blue delphiniums. Overhead was hung a long banner with the names of the two schools in appropriate colouring and their badges. Easy chairs and settees were ar ranged on the stage for thp onlookers. The decorations of the stage and hall were the work of Mrs W. Harrison, Mrs H. Ooleman, and the Misses Helen Ooleman, Alix. Rochfort, Jean Bcrodie and Alison Anderson. In the supper-room a most attractive scheme had been arranged by Mj s Noel Beamish, Mrs A. I. Rainbow and the Misses Lyndal Candy and Enid Twigg. Three long tables were set for supper, one carried out in Nga Tawa colours with crystal bowls of brown and gold flowers and foliage, one for Wanganui, with yellow chry3.in.ne-o-.ums, blue hydrangeas and olack privet berries, and tho third ft CortLFtion table with bonfire balvia, white narcissi and blue delphiniums. Out ol these bowls were standing gold crowns and Coronation emblems, while on each of the other tables were the letters bo form the name of the eohool. Menus painted with appropriate colours and topped with flags set out a number of delicacies which everyone enjoyed for supper. The committee which was responsible for the excellent arrangements were Mr and Mrs F. von Kettle, Mesdames H. M. Wilson, H. V. Hoa*. ey, A. I Rainbow, H. Coleman, W. Harri»on and Noel Beamish, Misses lyndal Candy, Gladys Hardy, i"nid Twigg, Nanm Logan, Diana Wilson, Dorothy Diarke, Margaret Grant, Kolon Coleman and tho excellent honorary secretaries, Miss Mary Wilson and Messrs Bruce Kelly and Doug/las Lindsay. Dainty little dance programmes with the school badges and colours on the front set out the dances, each being named after a school house, and the dance music was played by Les. Henry’s orchestra. The host for the evening was Mr F. von Kettle, president of the Hawke’s Bay branch of the Wanganui Old Boys’ Association, and in the unavoidable, absence of Mrs Kettle, the hostess was Miss Lyndal Candy, president of this branch of the Nga Tawa Old Girls.. Miss Candy wore a gown of flame cloque, the corsage and shoulder straps exquisitely beaded with crystal beads, and a matching coatee. Three Debutantes. Three debutantes were present at the ball. They were: Miss Catherine Crompton, daughter of Dr. and Mrs K. E. Crompton, of Havelock North, who wore a g?own of ivory satin with very high neckline in front forming a hanging scarf from each shoulder. Tho waistline was shaped in front and a sash hung from the back. She carried a posy of pink conations and fern. Miss Fay Hall, daughter of Mr and M.rs J.
